Long Weekend Getaways

"My favorite thing to do is go where I've never been."

Sometimes a weekend away someplace else is enough to recharge your batteries. Or maybe you just can't take that much time off work but crave exploration and adventure. This post will focus on long weekend getaways. Since I am based in Atlanta, I have used Google Flights to check for affordable flights to not too far away places from here. All flights are currently under $300 (per ticket) and can be done in less than 5 hours. So, let's go explore a few new towns and find out what activities and sites await us on our long weekend getaway.

In a variety of past posts, I have written about lots of other fantastic options including:

Asheville, North Carolina - Top Mountain towns in the Southeast

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - Best Hotels in each State - Part III

Washington D.C. - Bucket List: North America

In this post, I have curated a list of new destinations including:

Cancun, Mexico

Cancún, Mexico is one of the most popular travel destinations in the Caribbean, renowned for its beautiful beaches, vibrant nightlife, rich cultural experiences, and proximity to ancient Mayan ruins.

When to visit Cancun:

  • High Season (December to April): This is the most popular time to visit, with warm weather and plenty of events. However, it can also be the most expensive and crowded.

  • Low Season (May to November): While this period is quieter and cheaper, it’s also the rainy season, with a higher chance of hurricanes, especially from August to October. However, if you're looking for fewer tourists and lower prices, this might be a good time.

Waldorf Astoria Cancun

5-Star Hotel

The down sides of Cancún — in short, that it’s crowded, tacky, and overbuilt — don’t seem to apply when you’re within the expansive perimeter of this luxe 173-room resort. It’s relatively secluded, sharing a substantial parcel of land with the nearby Hilton Cancun, and it’s nothing if not tasteful. Rooms and suites are spacious and stylish, without a hint of tropical kitsch, and they’re exceedingly well furnished, easily the equal of any urban luxury hotel. The spa is inspired by Maya culture and rituals, the restaurants by authentic Mexican flavors, and the brand’s signature service is on display throughout.

Where to stay in Denver:

Budget Pick: Catbird Hotel

4-Star Hotel

Arguably the hippest neighborhood in Denver, RiNo, for River North, is the ever-evolving arts and culture district just to the north of downtown. First came the artists’ lofts and galleries, then the shops and restaurants, and now, finally, boutique hotels like the Catbird. This is as modern as they come in the Mile High City, a hotel that, strange as it sounds, is perhaps most reminiscent of Dutch boutique hospitality, thanks to a pervasive modernist influence and an approach that craftily packs a surplus of useful comforts into studio- and loft-sized spaces.

It’s geared as much towards long stays as to typical two-night tourist trips and offers services that feel almost residential: a low-key rooftop terrace bar and lounge, a fitness center with Peloton bikes, and the all-day Catbird Kitchen + Marketplace, which functions as a café, breakfast room, bar, restaurant, and co-working space all rolled into one. And next door is a hidden gem in a rather different style — the circa-1890 Klee House is a four-bedroom residence in weathered red brick whose interiors have been given a stylish postmodern makeover, and which is suited for up to eight guests, complete with a private kitchen.

But in another sense, it’s among the city’s most modern hotels, a luxury hotel that’s learned the lessons of the boutique-hotel age; for as swanky and opulent as the public spaces may be, the rooms and suites are contemporary classics, enlivened by custom furniture and wall-sized murals depicting antique city maps. During your stay, work out in the two-story gym, dine al fresco in the Garden and Tavern, or enjoy the California sunshine from the rooftop pool.

The Beverly Hills Hotel

5-Star Hotel

The Pink Palace has, in true Hollywood fashion, had some work done; nothing shocking, just a hundred-million-dollar renovation in an effort to stay competitive with a new generation. It’s a success—this place could have slid gently into self-parody, but it’s every bit as fine as when Marilyn Monroe and Yves Montand stayed here (ostensibly separately) in 1960.

Even without the glow of celebrities long since faded, it’s a stunning hotel. The standard rooms are lavish enough, mixing modern amenities like Frette linens and oversized bathrooms with 1940s Hollywood-classic decor, complete with private balconies. For true luxury, take advantage of the sprawling hacienda-style grounds by booking one of the bungalows. Utter privacy and the option of butler service guarantee you’ll feel like a star, and the Presidential Bungalow comes with a private jacuzzi and lap pool.

The Polo Lounge, the flagship restaurant and bar, is particularly rich with history—Hunter S. Thompson famously drank here, and Sinatra’s Rat Pack had the run of the place. The gardens and landscaping surely hide some secrets as well, and the outdoor pathways are carpeted, for quieter sneaking. Facilities include the Valmont spa and three restaurants, including the restored Fountain Coffee Shop (perfect for breakfast), where you never know who’ll discover you at the soda fountain and send you on your way.

The famous pool won’t disappoint either, with its green-and-white striped lounges (get to the pool early, as they are occupied quickly) and private cabanas complete with changing rooms and televisions, flanked by potted lemon trees and seahorse topiaries.

One of the villas happens to be owned by none other than Ralph Lauren, and though it’s not available to the public, the simple fact of it goes a long way toward describing Round Hill’s posh-casual atmosphere. And though you won’t be able to talk your way into his villa, you can quite easily get a look at the Lauren-designed hotel lounge.

As for entertainment, forget about some kind of heaving swingers’ nightclub: here it’s more like dining by the sea, after a day spent around the pool, at the private beach or in the Elemis spa.

Hotel Monaco Pittsburgh

4-Star Hotel

Poised at the intersection of three rivers, this once-gray city is now about green design and urban biking, the Mattress Factory art museum, Little Italy, craft beer produced in a recycled church. Today’s Pittsburgh is cool, and city developers know it, paving the way for thousands of new hotel rooms in recent years. The Hotel Monaco is one four new hotels opening around downtown’s Golden Triangle alone.

It’s a Kimpton hotel, so you know the drill. Bold design, friendly service, countless complimentary amenities, and a wink — lots of winks, in fact — to the location itself. Note the penguin-shaped lamps in unexpected places: that’s a shout-out, of course, to the city’s beloved ice hockey team. The Hotel Monaco is located inside a stately Beaux-Arts building that was once the headquarters of a law firm. And despite a nod to the architectural history — note the elegant molding and houndstooth drapery — it’s safe to say the atmosphere is a good deal more playful these days.

Guest rooms are vibrantly outfitted with vintage-inspired kelly green headboards, hand-painted black and white bedside tables, birdcage-shaped chandeliers, Italian Frette linens, classic leather armchairs, glass showers, and custom-made Monaco robes. Corner Spa rooms come with deep soaking tubs; lavish Emperor Suites are fit for a rock’n’roll posse. And thoughtful comforts are plentiful for all guests, including Kimpton’s signature in-room yoga mats and complimentary happy hour, plus cruiser bicycles that invite you to join the locals on their city bike baths.

Elsewhere in the hotel, there’s a state-of-the-art fitness center and a sleek restaurant, the Commoner, named after “the Great Commoner,” William Pitt. In fact, the hotel is practically a set-up for a scavenger hunt of Pittsburgh-related lore and legend. Guest rooms feature framed postcards and vintage memorabilia, and conference rooms after Jonas Salk, Rachael Carson, Roberto Clemente and Scott Fahlman. Who’s that last one, you ask? Oh, just a computer scientist from Carnegie Mellon University, best known as the inventor of the smiley face emoticon.

Olive Boutique Hotel

4-Star Hotel

A boutique hotel just outside of old town San Juan, Puerto Rico, that takes its inspiration from the Amalfi Coast? As a concept, it’s impossible to fault. And if we’re writing to you about it, then you can expect that the execution lives up to the promise. Condado, a rather new-looking corner of San Juan, may not be Sorrento, exactly, but once inside the Olive Boutique Hotel you’d be hard pressed to remain a cynic — it’s a new build, meaning the finishes are sparkling fresh and modern, as is the in-room gadgetry, but it’s steeped in antique atmosphere, thanks in large part to a generous smattering of antiques from Italy, Spain and all around the Mediterranean.

And other sorts of atmosphere as well. This is an intimate hotel, just fifteen rooms, and a decidedly romantic hotel to boot, peekaboo showers and all; less a place to bring the whole family than, perhaps, a suitably inspiring place to start one. Dinner means a trip to the rooftop restaurant, Sage Steak Loft, where local flavors meet steakhouse classics with a view — then back to a room that’s quiet, low-lit, and can’t fail to set a certain mood.

Dorado Beach

5-Star Hotel

Puerto Rico’s Dorado Beach had its last golden age in the 1960s, when guests like Elizabeth Taylor and John F. Kennedy found Puerto Rico’s glamour irresistible. In the intervening decades the island’s fortunes dimmed a bit, perhaps overlooked in favor of some more exotic, farther-flung destinations. But with the advent of Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, it’s clear this beach (and this island) are taking a decidedly upscale turn.

“Reserve” isn’t just the Ritz-Carlton way of saying “resort” — the analogy is to winemaking, which is to say that the Reserves are the most extravagant hotels in the Ritz-Carlton collection. At Dorado Beach that means sprawling, low-slung beachfront accommodations, universal butler service, and a spa that’s larger than some entire resorts, spreading out over five acres, including two treehouse treatment rooms.

The suites are lavish, contemporary in design but with plenty of nods to the property’s plantation history. Every one has a deep soaking tub and an outdoor shower, and every one faces directly out to sea. These contemporary suites — and the two- to four-bedroom residences — make up the vast bulk of Dorado Beach’s offering, and they’re extraordinary enough; the centerpiece, though, is Su Casa, a detailed reconstruction of the original plantation house built by the colorful Clara Livingston — this hacienda-style house boasts four bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, and an infinity pool, and in terms of both luxury and atmosphere, knocks the typical presidential suite into a cocked hat.

Dining and drinking options include Mi Casa, a Spanish restaurant by José Andrés, as well as Encanto, an open-air bar and grill, and Positivo Sand Bar, the perfect spot for a barefoot sunset cocktail. And it’s all executed with the utmost attention paid to the environment, which would no doubt have pleased Laurance Rockefeller, the developer of the original Dorado Beach.
