"Mother nature needs a chill pill."
If you are tired of the summer heat (like I am), perhaps you need a Coolcation - that is a getaway to escape the heat. Being from Atlanta, I know I would like one! In this post, I have put together a list of places you can go that offer cooler temps, beautiful sights to see and lots of things to do. Terrific places for a Coolcation include:
Maine (I plan on visiting next month!)
A road trip to Coastal Maine is a fantastic way to explore one of the most picturesque regions of the United States, known for its rugged coastline, charming small towns, and delicious seafood. We plan on doing a coastal road trip; I will include few of the coastal towns for you to choose from. It's about a 5-hour drive from Kennebunkport to Bar Harbor if you drive the coast. There are lots of things to see and do along the way.
Average Temperatures from August to October: Average highs fall around 80 degrees in August with lows in the 40s in October.
I recommend a road trip up the coast. There are some terrific towns to stay in; I will list a few and where it is recommended to stay in each.
Where to Stay:
Kennebunkport
Tides Beach Club
4-Star Hotel
The grand old Tides Beach Club, classic as ever on the outside, has had a contemporary makeover, and with bright colors and a youthful atmosphere added to the wraparound porches and the beachfront setting, it’s as welcoming as can be.
With just twenty-one rooms, the redesigned interiors are sharp, but far from shocking, a natural update to the classic Northeastern coastal style, rather than a total revolution. The new look reaches its peak in the pair of suites decorated by designer Jonathan Adler; but a similarly sunny vibe is in evidence throughout.
And while the look may be new, the history of the place is very much intact, and many of its charms are perfectly timeless: the beach, the coastal wildlife, even the classic New England cuisine on offer in the restaurant. Guests have access to the spa at the sister resort, Hidden Pond, and the staff is only too happy to show you to one of the Tides Beach Club’s handful of sister restaurants. Or anything else, really — the Tides is known, perhaps above all else, for its service.

From the moment you arrive at Hidden Pond you will know you are in for an altogether different experience. Surrounded by 60 acres of birch groves and balsam fir in Kennebunkport Maine our private luxury resort features two outdoor swimming pools a three-room treetop spa and organic dining at our award-winning restaurant Earth at Hidden Pond all just minutes from Goose Rocks Beach.

Perched on a hilltop - from its wrap around porch and delightful picture windows - the inn offers 180-degree views of Penobscot Bay, Camden Harbor and the surrounding mountains - the perfect invitation to explore the beautiful coastline of Maine.
16Bay View
In the seaside town of Camden, Maine, 16 Bay View is just about as central as it gets. It’s just steps from the harbor, set in a century-old red-brick industrial building whose exterior remains lovingly preserved, even as its interiors have been thoroughly transformed. It’s mostly a functional transformation, dividing its spaces into boutique-style luxury-hotel rooms and suites, all designed and decorated in a style that complements the historic structure — despite details like gas fireplaces and built-in flat-screens, 16 Bay View retains an atmosphere that’s pleasantly reminiscent of its original era.

Where to stay:
Aurora Villa
4-Star Hotel
Elsewhere in America the word “aurora” is strictly metaphorical, but at Aurora Villa, it’s entirely literal — here, at the end of a country road a half-hour from Fairbanks, in the Alaskan interior, the Northern Lights are a regular feature of the night sky. (For better viewing, the hotel’s lights go out at ten o’clock, and there’s very little ambient light in the surrounding area.) Aurora Villa’s Nordic-style minimalism is, in some ways, incongruously stylish in a place where rustic lodges are the norm — but at this latitude, it stands under the same night sky as Iceland and northern Scandinavia.

Where to stay:
Hotel Ranga
For all the ruggedness of the land and the otherworldly beauty of the setting, Iceland is not exactly rich in impressive places to stay. It seems as though it might be ripe for something like the New Zealand model, with rustic lodges scattered over the island. There’s no guarantee that’s where Icelandic tourism is headed, of course, but if by chance it is, then the Hotel Rangá is a very fine start.
It’s located on the southern coast of the island, a little more than an hour east of Reykjavik — which, in Iceland, means you’re in pretty much the middle of nowhere. With a volcano behind it and the sea in front of it, it’s not hurting for scenery, but it’s at night that the Rangá really shines — during the Northern Lights there’s hardly a better place on earth from which to see them.
The lodge itself is as rustic as it gets, a traditional log cabin construction. The guest quarters are largely wood-paneled, some of the rooms tucked up under the eaves, with views over the spectacularly bleak Icelandic landscape. And the suites take it to another level, each one themed after another continent — the Asian suite is a Japanese-style tatami room, and the African is something straight out of a Tarzan film. For Icelanders they’re probably just the thing to break out of the Nordic status quo, but outsiders might prefer something a little more understated. And whatever it lacks in rolling hills and wandering sheep it more than makes up for in glaciers, waterfalls, hot springs, and the whole Iceland experience.
