Best Hotels in each U.S. State - Part I

"From sea to shining sea, the United States is a canvas of diverse beauty waiting to be explored."

I haven't visited every state, but I certainly would like to. I have curated a list of hotels that I think are the best in each state (based on copious research). This is purely subjective, of course, because some states have hundreds if not thousands of fantastic hotels and narrowing down to a particular area in some states is quite difficult, but I thought this would serve as an ultimate guide on where to go and what to do in each. I hope you enjoy this post and get some ideas on where to go on your next trip.

Alabama -

Best place to visit: Birmingham

Traveling to Birmingham, Alabama offers a rich mix of history, culture, and Southern charm.

Standing sentry in a buzzing arts and entertainment district, the Elyton Hotel invites guests to lodge in an architectural treasure as part of Birmingham’s famed “Heaviest Corner on Earth.” Originally known as the Empire Building, the tower is a classical-revival stunner, its 117 rooms and suites supplied with plentiful light and a sense of spaciousness. The Elyton’s dining room, the Yard, serves upscale American brunch as well as a fun page of small plates and refined bistro entrees. Not only is semi-private dining available in the for-rent Empire Room, but a Chef’s Table menu is available for small parties, allowing a behind-the-scenes look at the Yard alongside courses paired with wines and top-flight service.

For decades travelers have made the pilgrimage to Canyon Ranch, a few minutes’ drive outside of Tucson, to chill out, to work out, to dry out, or some combination of the three. Delaware

Wilmington, Delaware, is a vibrant city with a rich history, diverse cultural offerings, and a central location that makes it a great destination for both exploration and relaxation.

Best time to visit: Spring or Summer

Best Hotel:

The Quoin

Wilmington, Delaware flies under the radar for a number of reasons, but boutique-hotel aficionados have at least one reason to keep it on the list: the Quoin, a Romanesque bank building in the historic downtown center, now renovated by the Philadelphia-based Method Co. and Stokes Architecture + Design into a warm, livable, and richly detailed boutique hotel.

“Richly detailed” is worth saying twice — the minimalism that used to be the calling card of the urban boutique hotel is nowhere in evidence. Instead, you’ll find vintage and custom furnishings, abundant visual texture in the form of artworks, graphics, and printed wallpapers, and plenty of living plants. The public spaces feel homey, as do the rooms and suites, even as they’re equipped with boutique-hotel comforts like Aēsop bath products and Lavazza espresso machines.

Also, key to the success of a hotel like the Quoin are a variety of dining and drinking spaces. The Quoin Restaurant combines the flavors of northern Italy and the south of France, along with wines and craft cocktails, while Simmer Down converts the old bank vault into an opulent cocktail bar. Atop the hotel is Wilmington’s first rooftop bar and lounge, and the Quoin Café serves coffee and pastries in a welcoming living-room-style space.

No Vacancy is not a conventional hotel. There’s no front desk, and rooms are more like studio apartments. No two are alike, but they’re all infused with ample natural light and a cozy, bohemian-chic sensibility: exposed brick walls, wood-beamed ceilings, large windows framed by breezy white drapery, and potted plants. They feature a mix of mid-century modern pieces and quirkier furnishings, like bamboo barstools, a metallic gold disco ball over the bed, or a woven wicker chair suspended from the ceiling. Three have kitchenettes; one a freestanding clawfoot tub, and another a romantic four-poster bed and a vintage wet bar.

At the end of the main hallway, the colorful communal lounge, with its plush banquette seating, opens onto the inviting courtyard patio. Both offer plenty of space to work, socialize, or relax over coffee or drinks.

Kentucky

Best Place: Louisville

Traveling to Louisville, Kentucky, offers a mix of historic charm, cultural richness, and Southern hospitality. As the largest city in Kentucky, Louisville has a variety of attractions, dining options, and experiences.

Best time to visit: Spring

21C Museum Hotel Louisville

On the face of it, Louisville, Kentucky seems about the unlikeliest place for a hotel like the 21c. Not just an inspired modern boutique hotel, but a 9,000-square-foot contemporary art gallery as well, it’s the sort of place that would turn heads even in New York or Los Angeles — in Louisville, where the Midwest gives way to the South, it’s positively shocking. But this is a post-industrial city that’s reinvented itself, and while some cities hitch their renewal wagons to sports teams or suburban office parks, Louisville is going the arts-and-culture route.

The 21c belongs to locals Steve Wilson and his wife Laura Lee Brown, whose foundation owns the art collection that fills the hotel’s gallery. The couple brought in the New York-based architect Deborah Berke, whose portfolio, fittingly, includes both Yale’s new art school and the Scottsdale Mondrian hotel. And while the boutique hotels in many smaller provincial cities are tepid affairs, offering half-hearted gestures in the direction of modern design and taking care not to alienate the traditionalists, the 21c, by contrast, has left all caution behind.

Rooms are as urbane as they come, packed with artworks, custom-designed furnishings and high-tech amenities like 42-inch LCD televisions. Proof On Main, the hotel’s restaurant, brings a taste of sophistication to the downtown dining scene, and the museum, of course, is one of the neighborhood’s star attractions. Louisville may have a way to go before it’s the new Manhattan, but it’s clear that the 21c is the start of something, drawing art-savvy travelers who, until recently, would have been hard pressed to imagine a reason to visit Kentucky — but who, once there, may find its traditional charms (who could say no to a wee dram of bourbon, watching the races at Churchill Downs) impossible to resist.

Things to do in Louisville:

1. Top Attractions

Churchill Downs:

  • Home of the Kentucky Derby: Visit the iconic racetrack known for hosting the Kentucky Derby, the longest-running horse race in the U.S.
