Ona Havstuer has a fantastic location right by the ferry pier and with a beautiful view of the sea. Here you can enjoy the season from May to September/October.
The hotel offers apartments, some with kitchens, and hotel rooms. All accommodations meet modern comfort requirements while being furnished in a style that suits the character of the buildings.

The picturesque port town of Ålesund, Norway isn’t exactly one of the world’s style capitals, but it’s got a very hip family-owned boutique hotel in the form of the atmospheric Hotel Brosundet. The classic building’s wood beams and original architecture remain in place, updated with contemporary interiors and cozy furniture — the lobby’s fireplace is a particularly inviting space. Rooms vary in size; some feature views of the water, others the surrounding city. There’s a stylish little restaurant with seasonal outdoor seating, as well as a small bar serving craft cocktails, and the afternoon tea service is accompanied by live music.
Storfjord Hotel

if it’s a comfortably cool rural idyll you’re looking for, it doesn’t get much more picturesque than the Storfjorden, on the west coast, where the Storfjord Hotel sits surrounded by thousands of acres of protected woodland.
It’s constructed in the traditional lafta style, with whole timbers, and the interiors are ruggedly elegant, furnished with antiques and classic Norwegian furnishings. Of course it’s not only the interiors you’re here to see, but the landscape as well, and each of the bedrooms has a balcony looking out over the fjord and the surrounding mountains. It’s not excessively opulent luxury of the presidential-suite variety, but it’s a luxury boutique by any standard.
Summers here are remarkably mild, with temperatures regularly reaching levels we’d sooner expect in the Mediterranean, though this being Northern Europe the weather is of course unpredictable. Winters, meanwhile, are pretty much what you’d expect Norway to be, and if it’s snow sports you’re after, you’ve come to the right place. Tours and excursions are available in all seasons, and while there’s not exactly a wealth of restaurants nearby, the Storfjord’s dining room serves a locally sourced four-course dinner nightly.
Though about as remote as can be, the Storfjord is in actual fact only forty minutes’ drive from Ålesund, a fair-sized city with a proper commercial airport, served by regular flights from London, Oslo and Copenhagen as well as Trondheim and Riga, Latvia.

Bled, Slovenia, is a picture-perfect destination, especially during the festive season, when the town and its surroundings transform into a magical winter wonderland. Old Bled House offers free private parking in front of the entrance. Internet connection is free and available in all rooms.

Hotel Kitzhof Mountain Design Resort

To say that Hotel Kitzhof is more than the sum of its parts is to drastically understate the case. The 163-room resort in the Austrian Alps takes the familiar materials of a traditional alpine lodge — black-and-white photos of olden-days skiers, an abundance of pine, hunting trophies (i.e. antlers) mounted on the walls — and transforms them into something completely different from what those ingredients suggest. It’s a modern design hotel worthy of the title.
Its home, Kitzbühel, is a fashionable ski town in the classic Austrian Alps mold, and views of its streets, rooftops and towers make appearances in many of the hotel’s guest rooms. One step up from the standard single, the Tyrol double rooms have balconies with loungers from which you can watch neighborhood life amble by, while the Horn and Streif double rooms draw the eyes a little higher, to the surrounding mountains. While all of the rooms feel contemporary, the Superior rooms feel especially fresh, with leather armchairs, spacious entrance areas (good for taking off ski- or hiking gear), and stone bathrooms with walk-in rain showers and separate bathtubs.
In the process of scaling up a stylish boutique hotel, the Kitzhof comes through with all the expected resort amenities, too. There are several excellent restaurants serving everything from healthy snacks to Tyrolean delicacies, one with a lovely walk-in wine cellar. Then there are large modern conference and board rooms, an indoor pool filled with Grander (specially purified) water, and a spa with a full menu of treatment options plus saunas, a steam bath and a fitness room with breathtaking views.
Of course, the views on the nearby slopes are pretty breathtaking, too. The area draws ski-crowds throughout the winter, especially for the Hahnenkamm downhill race in late January. In summer it quiets down, but especially around here, the Alps look as pretty in green as they do in white.

And while its present-day exterior blends seamlessly with the rest of Salzburg’s picturesque architecture, what’s inside is a luxury boutique hotel that’s as modern as they come.
The thinking, it seems, is much like that displayed by Italian hoteliers in places like Florence: leave it to the rest of the city to create an atmospheric backdrop, and inside, go wild with contemporary art and design, mixing references to traditional Venetian glass art with modern furniture and wall-sized murals. The result would be eye-popping in Vienna or even Berlin; for Salzburg it’s nothing short of extraordinary.
So, too, is the restaurant, Steinterrasse, a terrace bar and restaurant with an impressive view of old town Salzburg from the height of the seventh floor. Meanwhile LIEBHABEREI, the ground-floor bakery and market, serves up quick, healthy bites (and sips) to guests and locals alike.

The building that’s home to the Arthotel Blaue Gans has stood in this spot on the Getriedegasse for so many centuries that its precise age is unknown. It’s been a hotel for some time, but only recently has it joined the movement of Arthotels that is currently sweeping the German-speaking world.
The result is charming, rich in contrasts: medieval archways and wooden beams remain, alongside the more modern decorating scheme of whitewashed walls and modernist furnishings atop hardwood floors. Framed artworks hang on the walls throughout the hotel, courtesy of the hotel’s three sponsored contemporary artists.
It’s a fetching enough concept on its own, but the motivation may have been more clever than that: the timing of the Arthotel overhaul seems to have roughly coincided with the opening of Salzburg’s Museum of Modern Art. Presumably the new influx of visiting artists and dealers needed somewhere suitably modern to hang their hats.
This is still the center of old Salzburg, though, just a few blocks from Mozart’s birthplace. And the Blaue Gans is still a fixture on the old town scene, with a relaxed lounge bar and a Mediterranean-style garden restaurant still local favorites. Book the Cavern, the cellar dining room, for a more intimate experience.
