Whether you're drawn to snow-capped mountains, festive markets, or cozy streets adorned with twinkling lights, these villages offer an enchanting escape into winter wonderlands. From the festive spirit of Salzburg in Austria, to the alpine beauty of Kitzbühel, or the quaint coastal allure of Ålesund in Norway, each destination has its own unique appeal. Explore the fairytale-like atmosphere in Bled. Discover the timeless beauty of Menton on the French Riviera and the luxurious alpine resort of St. Moritz. These European villages are the perfect holiday destinations for those seeking both adventure and serenity during the most magical time of the year.

In past posts, I have written about other fantastic destinations for the holidays including:

Halstatt, Austria - Fairy Tale Escapes

Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy - Top Ten Amazing Race Destinations

In this post, I will focus on some other fantastic places including:

Alesund, Norway

Ålesund, Norway, is a stunning coastal town known for its unique architecture, scenic beauty, and proximity to some of Norway’s most famous natural landmarks. Situated on the west coast, surrounded by fjords and mountains, Ålesund offers a perfect mix of outdoor adventure, culture, and history, making it an excellent destination for travelers seeking both relaxation and exploration.

Why should you visit during the holidays:

Ålesund is a magical winter wonderland in the colder months. The town is often covered in snow, and the nearby ski resorts are perfect for winter sports. The Christmas season in Ålesund is also a charming time to visit, with festive lights and cozy atmospheres.

Where to stay in Alesund:

Budget Pick: Ona Havstuer

3-Star Hotel

Ona, one of Norway's southernmost fishing villages, is located at the far end of the ocean gap on the Romsdal coast and is home to only 16 permanent residents.

Ona Havstuer has a fantastic location right by the ferry pier and with a beautiful view of the sea. Here you can enjoy the season from May to September/October.

The hotel offers apartments, some with kitchens, and hotel rooms. All accommodations meet modern comfort requirements while being furnished in a style that suits the character of the buildings.

Hotel Brosundet

4-Star Hotel

The picturesque port town of Ålesund, Norway isn’t exactly one of the world’s style capitals, but it’s got a very hip family-owned boutique hotel in the form of the atmospheric Hotel Brosundet. The classic building’s wood beams and original architecture remain in place, updated with contemporary interiors and cozy furniture — the lobby’s fireplace is a particularly inviting space. Rooms vary in size; some feature views of the water, others the surrounding city. There’s a stylish little restaurant with seasonal outdoor seating, as well as a small bar serving craft cocktails, and the afternoon tea service is accompanied by live music.

Storfjord Hotel

5-Star Hotel

if it’s a comfortably cool rural idyll you’re looking for, it doesn’t get much more picturesque than the Storfjorden, on the west coast, where the Storfjord Hotel sits surrounded by thousands of acres of protected woodland.

It’s constructed in the traditional lafta style, with whole timbers, and the interiors are ruggedly elegant, furnished with antiques and classic Norwegian furnishings. Of course it’s not only the interiors you’re here to see, but the landscape as well, and each of the bedrooms has a balcony looking out over the fjord and the surrounding mountains. It’s not excessively opulent luxury of the presidential-suite variety, but it’s a luxury boutique by any standard.

Summers here are remarkably mild, with temperatures regularly reaching levels we’d sooner expect in the Mediterranean, though this being Northern Europe the weather is of course unpredictable. Winters, meanwhile, are pretty much what you’d expect Norway to be, and if it’s snow sports you’re after, you’ve come to the right place. Tours and excursions are available in all seasons, and while there’s not exactly a wealth of restaurants nearby, the Storfjord’s dining room serves a locally sourced four-course dinner nightly.

Though about as remote as can be, the Storfjord is in actual fact only forty minutes’ drive from Ålesund, a fair-sized city with a proper commercial airport, served by regular flights from London, Oslo and Copenhagen as well as Trondheim and Riga, Latvia.

What to see and do in Alesund:

Genuine gentlemanly and ladylike sensitivities are still very much alive at the Grand Hotel Toplice. The day starts with breakfast prepared with fresh seasonal ingredients. Warm up with mulled wine or a hot chocolate while wandering through the market or by the lake.

6. Bled Island and Church of the Assumption:

One of the most iconic sights in Bled is Bled Island and its beautiful Church of the Assumption. Kitzbuhel, Austria

Kitzbühel, a picturesque alpine town in Austria, is a magical destination during the holiday season. Known for its world-class ski resorts, charming medieval town center, and festive atmosphere, Kitzbühel is an ideal place for travelers looking to experience a quintessential European winter holiday. Whether you're into skiing, cozying up in a traditional chalet, or enjoying the Christmas markets, Kitzbühel offers a variety of experiences during the holidays.

Why visit Kitzbuhel during the holidays:

Kitzbühel is an iconic winter destination that offers a mix of exhilarating outdoor sports, traditional alpine charm, and festive celebrations. Whether you’re an avid skier, a lover of winter scenery, or simply seeking a cozy escape in the mountains, Kitzbühel has everything you need to make your winter getaway unforgettable. Its world-class skiing, charming atmosphere, and abundance of winter activities make it one of the best places to visit in the winter season.

Where to stay in Kitzbuhel:

Budget Pick: Explorer Hotel

3-Star Hotel

Explorer Hotel in St. Johann is the perfect starting point for your Kitzbühel holiday in Austria. Not directly in the hustle and bustle, but close enough to start your adventure at any time and quickly reach the city center. Enjoy the peace and quiet while you are already planning the next powder runs or bike tours in your head. And when you've had enough of relaxing, you'll be in the middle of the action in no time at all – it doesn't get any better than that!

Hotel Kitzhof Mountain Design Resort

4-Star Hotel

To say that Hotel Kitzhof is more than the sum of its parts is to drastically understate the case. The 163-room resort in the Austrian Alps takes the familiar materials of a traditional alpine lodge — black-and-white photos of olden-days skiers, an abundance of pine, hunting trophies (i.e. antlers) mounted on the walls — and transforms them into something completely different from what those ingredients suggest. It’s a modern design hotel worthy of the title.

Its home, Kitzbühel, is a fashionable ski town in the classic Austrian Alps mold, and views of its streets, rooftops and towers make appearances in many of the hotel’s guest rooms. One step up from the standard single, the Tyrol double rooms have balconies with loungers from which you can watch neighborhood life amble by, while the Horn and Streif double rooms draw the eyes a little higher, to the surrounding mountains. While all of the rooms feel contemporary, the Superior rooms feel especially fresh, with leather armchairs, spacious entrance areas (good for taking off ski- or hiking gear), and stone bathrooms with walk-in rain showers and separate bathtubs.

In the process of scaling up a stylish boutique hotel, the Kitzhof comes through with all the expected resort amenities, too. There are several excellent restaurants serving everything from healthy snacks to Tyrolean delicacies, one with a lovely walk-in wine cellar. Then there are large modern conference and board rooms, an indoor pool filled with Grander (specially purified) water, and a spa with a full menu of treatment options plus saunas, a steam bath and a fitness room with breathtaking views.

Of course, the views on the nearby slopes are pretty breathtaking, too. The area draws ski-crowds throughout the winter, especially for the Hahnenkamm downhill race in late January. In summer it quiets down, but especially around here, the Alps look as pretty in green as they do in white.

Hotel Weisses Roessl Kitzbuhel

5-Star Hotel

Hotel Weisses Roessl Kitzbühel, proud member of “The Leading Hotels of the World”, is a unique design & lifestyle hotel in the heart of the famous city of Kitzbühel.

Here, a modern interior meets a historical structure. Dating from the 17th century, this luxury hotel in the center of Kitzbühel is not just for skiers and golfers – the spa includes an indoor pool, beauty, massage and a sauna for those looking for a gentler pace. Diners who like a side order of fashion with their food will be delighted to learn that the hotel hosts an outpost of Japanese restaurant Zuma. Family-owned for nearly 20 years, the hotel was comprehensively refurbished in 2017 and the bedrooms are particularly comfortable.

Where to stay in Salzburg:

Budget Pick: Hotel Stein

3-Star Hotel

Though Salzburg’s hoteliers clearly would prefer that travelers not forget about its rich musical heritage, the fact remains that this is a city with plenty to recommend it in the here and now. Hotel Stein, like much else in this corner of Austria, has deep historical roots — there’s been an inn on this site since the year 1399. And while its present-day exterior blends seamlessly with the rest of Salzburg’s picturesque architecture, what’s inside is a luxury boutique hotel that’s as modern as they come.

The thinking, it seems, is much like that displayed by Italian hoteliers in places like Florence: leave it to the rest of the city to create an atmospheric backdrop, and inside, go wild with contemporary art and design, mixing references to traditional Venetian glass art with modern furniture and wall-sized murals. The result would be eye-popping in Vienna or even Berlin; for Salzburg it’s nothing short of extraordinary.

So, too, is the restaurant, Steinterrasse, a terrace bar and restaurant with an impressive view of old town Salzburg from the height of the seventh floor. Meanwhile LIEBHABEREI, the ground-floor bakery and market, serves up quick, healthy bites (and sips) to guests and locals alike.

Arthotel Blaue Ganx

4-Star Hotel

The building that’s home to the Arthotel Blaue Gans has stood in this spot on the Getriedegasse for so many centuries that its precise age is unknown. It’s been a hotel for some time, but only recently has it joined the movement of Arthotels that is currently sweeping the German-speaking world.

The result is charming, rich in contrasts: medieval archways and wooden beams remain, alongside the more modern decorating scheme of whitewashed walls and modernist furnishings atop hardwood floors. Framed artworks hang on the walls throughout the hotel, courtesy of the hotel’s three sponsored contemporary artists.

It’s a fetching enough concept on its own, but the motivation may have been more clever than that: the timing of the Arthotel overhaul seems to have roughly coincided with the opening of Salzburg’s Museum of Modern Art. Presumably the new influx of visiting artists and dealers needed somewhere suitably modern to hang their hats.

This is still the center of old Salzburg, though, just a few blocks from Mozart’s birthplace. And the Blaue Gans is still a fixture on the old town scene, with a relaxed lounge bar and a Mediterranean-style garden restaurant still local favorites. Book the Cavern, the cellar dining room, for a more intimate experience.

Rosewood Schloss Fuschl

5-Star Hotel

Set on the shores of Austria’s spectacular Lake Fuschl, less than half an hour by car from Salzburg, Rosewood Schloss Fuschl looks like something out of a fairy tale. And while the castle itself does date to the 15th century, what’s inside is a thoroughly 21st-century luxury hotel, complete with a modern spa and some 98 rooms, suites, and freestanding chalets. The style is modern-luxe with plenty of historical character; like all the best hotels Schloss Fuschl retains a strong sense of place. The restaurants show off Austria’s culinary traditions at their finest, while the leisure options make the most of this picturesque mountain lake.

What to see and do in Salzburg during the holidays:

Salzburg’s famous Christmas markets are a major highlight during the holidays. The Salzburg Christkindlmarkt at Residenzplatz is one of the oldest and most picturesque in Europe, with charming wooden stalls selling everything from handcrafted gifts to seasonal treats like gingerbread cookies and mulled wine. The festive atmosphere, with twinkling lights, sweet scents, and traditional carols, creates an enchanting setting for holiday shopping and enjoying the festive cheer.

2. Winter Wonderland Setting

Salzburg is located in the heart of the Austrian Alps, providing a stunning winter landscape during the holiday season. The city’s streets, squares, and surrounding mountains are often covered in snow, making it feel like a fairy-tale destination. Whether walking through the Getreidegasse or visiting the Hohensalzburg Fortress, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks and picturesque views that make Salzburg particularly special in winter.

3. Festive Concerts and Music Events

As the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Salzburg has a rich musical heritage. During the holidays, you can attend Mozart concerts, Christmas carol performances, and classical music events at historical venues like the Salzburg Cathedral and the Mozarteum. The city’s musical atmosphere is perfect for those looking to experience holiday spirit through the beauty of classical music, from intimate performances to grand concerts.

4. Traditional Austrian Cuisine

The holiday season is an excellent time to indulge in Austrian cuisine, and Salzburg’s cozy restaurants offer an array of festive treats. Enjoy wiener schnitzel, roast goose, and classic holiday desserts like apple strudel or Sacher Torte. The Christmas markets also provide delicious local snacks, such as marzipan, roasted chestnuts, and punsch (hot punch). The combination of great food and a festive atmosphere makes Salzburg a culinary delight during the holidays.

5. Cozy Atmosphere and Hospitality

Salzburg’s charming cafes, historic inns, and elegant hotels provide a warm, inviting atmosphere during the colder months. The hospitality of the local people adds to the festive spirit, creating a welcoming environment for visitors. Whether you’re curling up by a fire in a cozy restaurant or sipping hot chocolate in a cafe, Salzburg’s warmth and charm during the holidays make it feel like home.

6. Winter Sports and Outdoor Activities

Ice skating in Salzburg’s Volksgarten ice rink is also a popular activity during the holiday season.

7. Magical Holiday Events

During the holiday season, Salzburg hosts several unique events that enhance the festive experience. The St. Nicholas Parade and the Krampus Run (a fun, traditional event featuring figures in eerie costumes) are quirky highlights. You can also enjoy New Year’s Eve Galas and special performances at the Salzburg Opera House or Mirabell Palace, offering a touch of luxury and elegance to your holiday visit.

8. Picturesque Scenery and Iconic Landmarks

Salzburg is full of historic landmarks and iconic sites that look even more beautiful when covered in a blanket of snow. The Hohensalzburg Fortress offers panoramic views of the city and surrounding mountains, while the Mirabell Palace and Gardens provide a serene place to explore in winter. Where to stay in St. Mortiz:

Budget Pick: Hotel Chesa Spuondas

3-Star Hotel

Spend unforgettable moments at 1,800 meters above sea level. Look forward to a magnificent panoramic view, fresh mountain air and an unmistakable ambience.

Hotel Chesa Spuondas is a historic Engadin art nouveau villa. The hotel is only 2.5 kilometers away from the center of St. Moritz in an impressive location. Surrounded by meadows and forest with a view of the Engadin lakes and mountains, it is an ideal starting point for hiking, biking or cross-country ski tours.

Guests have access to a spacious communal area consisting of a library, a lounge with a grand piano and a fireplace, as well as a dining room. Furniture from the region and antiques add to the charm of the house.

Each of the 19 rooms is unique and furnished with attention to detail. There are no televisions or telephones in the bedrooms to distract guests from relaxing and enjoying the extensive views. Only in the library is there a guest TV. However, Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel.

Nira Alpina

4-Star Hotel

If a hotel in Surlej, Switzerland wanted to indulge its quaint side, all the ingredients are in place: the alpine village is nestled in the picturesque Engadin Valley, offering an unobstructed view down the mountain pass to Lake Silvaplana. Here, the sun is shining almost every day of the year, the climate is dry and pleasant, and hardy pleasure-seekers put skis to slopes in winter and bikes to trails in summer. Thankfully, Nira Alpina eschews chalet kitsch in favor of modern construction defined by glass and locally sourced timber. After all, Surlej is just a few minutes’ drive from St. Moritz, the next lake up the road — presumably its visitors are no strangers to contemporary architecture and design.

The five-story structure is appealingly low-slung, and its seventy guest rooms have all been designed in service of the mighty views helpfully provided by the valley. Each room boasts its own terrace or balcony, and the abundance of floor-to-ceiling windows ensure that you’re never far from the panorama. Clean-lined furniture and a preponderance of blond wood chase away any lingering folksiness from the village, while deep baths and waterfall showers make each bathroom a sleek yet welcoming haven. There isn’t a whole lot of aesthetic variation between the rooms, but the junior suites practically double the living space.

While one of Nira Alpina’s three restaurants is all about cheese, fondue and regional beers served among vintage local décor, the rest of the public spaces feel curiously urban-inspired. At the rooftop bar, guests snack on Asian fusion dishes around the glass cube of a fireplace. The same goes for the spa, which makes elements like an underwater relaxation bed and color-changing fountain feel like après-ski classics.

Badrutt's Palace

5-Star Hotel

St. Moritz — now a hotbed of furs and slopes and lots of champagne — was nothing before Johannes Badrutt. He made this town when he persuaded a bunch of English tourists to try skiing. And today his legacy lives on as the definition of wintry European glamour: Badrutt’s Palace Hotel.

This is a castle, high on the hills, where the beautiful people converge for the après ski, and where fondue is most passé. The best rooms sport big beds and walls cushioned with silk and leather, à la Fred and Ginger movies. There’s a spa, of course, and a long list of restaurants (of which more later). But above all there’s the reflected glow of the glamour that comes simply from being at Badrutt’s.

Restaurants include the formal Le Restaurant and the Belle Époque–styled Le Relais, as well as La Diala, the spa restaurant, and La Coupole - Matsuhisa, which features the eponymous chef’s signature Peruvian-Japanese flavors.
